After watching this movie three times,a word that turned up from my bottom of heart is peace.
The three women and a male poet all lived in a unideal way. With facing the fact, each of them wants to find the peace of heart, which means everything. So things happened. The whole day daily life of each one,the virtual and reality, the novel and fact, waved and occurred in a complicated relationship.
There are three partical clues including 3 women's whole life in a single day.Three women will be introduced as follows.
Mrs. Woolf,Virginia, the writer, was thinked crazy because she tried to kill herself. She write things, but couldn't control the heroic's fate, finally suicide. Her novel Mrs. Dalloway ,which heroic is the second woman,Clarissa, was read by Laura ,the third woman of this movie.
Mrs. Dalloway,Clarissa, the heroic of Virginia's novel,is a gay but also love and take care of the disabled poet,Richard, who is Laura’s son!Her life is mixed up but can’t change until Richard jumps off a building.
Laura,a man's wife ,whose son is the lover of Mrs. Dalloway,is pregnant ,still a young lady and has a beautiful son Richard .She is the only one I can’t figured out why she tried to kill herself.
Richard ,the son and the poet, also wrote or imagined a novel similar to Mrs. Dalloway but the different point was her mother died in his novel most likely because of the abandonment of his mother Laura.
There are several point in common in this movie. The first one, kiss,Virginia kissed her sister,Mrs. Dalloway kissed Sally,Laura kissed her good friend Kitty,in my opinion, those behaviors looked out of common customs actually they just comforted in that way, pure without other things.Secondly, the children witnessed this sceny, when Laura kissed Kitty,Richard was there, when Virginia kissed her sister, her niece also was there. That means something.
The third same thing is peace.Virginia, the real person,in this day, suicided after finshing the novel. As a inteligent author, she was seem to be weird, crazy and she had to tolerated all the strange vision. The death means peace to her.In her novel,a poet is similar to her, also talent but living in a dark, shabby attic. He was alive for Mrs. Dalloway. One day he awared his death may give her freedom. He just do it!
Mrs. Dalloway met Richard’s mother Laura finally. They enlightened each other, finding positive to life instead of avoiding is the only turth.
As far as Virginia was concerned, “you cannot find peace by avoiding life”.

Virginia: What I want to say is that I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me. And incredibly good. Everything is gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can't go on spoiling your life any longer. I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been.
Richard: You've been so good to me, Mrs.Dalloway. I love you. I don't think two people could have been happier than we've been.

Virginia

"I feel certain that I'm going mad again. I think we can't go through another of these terrible times and I shan't recover this time."

  1. Born (25 Jan)
  2. Death of her mother. VW has the first of many nervous breakdowns.
  3. Death of father. Beginning of second serious breakdown.
  4. Marries Leonard Woolf.
  5. Mental illness and her first attempted suicide. Put in care of husband and nurses.
John McManamy在2002年刊出的篇章<维吉妮亚 Woolf and Her Madness>中涉嫌"she entered a severe depression in which she made an attempt on her life by swallowing 100 grains of Veronal(一种安眠药)."
  6. Purchase of Hogarth House, Richmond. Another bout of violent madness.
What a gap! How it would have astounded me to be told when I wrote the last word here, on June 7th, that within a week I "should" be in bed, and not entirely out of it till the 6th of August - two
    whole months rubbed out."
  7. when she was working on "The Years", the constant cycle of mania and depression was beginning to overtake her. The revision was particularly difficult.
  8. VW drowned herself in the River Ouse.

I begin to hear voices"这点有据可寻.PeterDally依据Virginia的诚实资料,在一九九七年登出的<The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Manic Depression and the Life of 维吉妮亚Woolf>中明显提议V日常听到的声息是 "birds spoke to her in Greek, her dead mother materialized and harangued her, voices called her to 'do wild things'. She refused nourishment. Trusted companions like her husband Leonard and her sister 温妮莎 became enemies and were abused and assaulted."

4.Virginia写下"Mrs. Dalloway said that she would buy the flowers herself"

-=-=-=-=-=

有关Laura
Dalloway同样,do sth only by herself.
She will not lose hope. She will not mourn her lost possibilities, her unexplored talents (what if she has no talents, after all?). She will remain devoted to her son, her husband, her home and duties, all her gifts. She will want this second child.
摘自Laura's thoughts, the final sentences of the chapter, p. 79, 1999 Fourth Estate paperback edition

They came home from the war。 They deserved it, didn't they?
After all they've been through.
-What did they deserve?
I don't know. Us,I guess, all this.

4.sally看看laura后说:so that's the monster。 so, clearly, the monster.

You did the seating?
I did.
I don't believe it - Louis Waters! Is Louis coming?! Richard's Louis?
He is.
You put him next to me. Why do I always have to sit next to the ex-es?
Is it some kind of hint, sweetheart? Shouldn't the ex-es have table of their own, where they can all "ex" together?

That was the moment, right then. There has been no other."

Anyway, it doesn't matter. It was you he stayed with...and I had one summer"

-=-=-=-=

Vanessa Bell: Virginia.
Virginia Woolf: Leonard thinks it's the end of civilization: People who are invited at 4 and arrive at 2:30.
Vanessa Bell: Oh God.
Virginia Woolf: Barbarians.

Mrs. Mrs.

Kitty: All my life I could do everything. I could do anything, really. Except the one thing I wanted.

Mrs. Dalloway
Dalloway。 Dalloway。 Dalloway。

-=-=-=-=-=

Leonard Woolf: If I didn't know you better I'd call this ingratitude.
Virginia Woolf: I am ungrateful? You call ME ungrateful? My life has been stolen from me. I'm living in a town I have no wish to live in... I'm living a life I have no wish to live... How did this happen?

桥段1.Laura情难自禁地用吻安慰Kitty,多人在一秒钟的纵容后惊吓地匆匆送别;
桥段2.维吉妮亚同表妹诉说着心事(就算她姐并没把她当好人看),七个外甥不符合时机地苏息了她的倾诉;
桥段3.Clarissa在追思中同女儿享受着他的人生顿悟,立马被起哄的门铃声硬生生打断;
......

there are times when you don't belong and you think you are going to kill yourself.

Clarissa

But what is it mean to regret when you have no choice?"It's what you can bare. Here it is, no one is going to forgive me. It was death. I chose life.

I know that i am spoilling your life.

Without me, you could work and you will. I know.

To look life in the face. Always, to look life in the face...

And to know it for what it is...at last to know it

To love it for what it is...

And then...to put it away.

Always the years between us.

Always the years...

Always the love...

Always the hours...

"To look life in the face. Always, to look life in the face...

And to know it for what it is..."

"...at last to know it"

"To love it for what it is..."

And then...to put it away."

"Always the years between us.

Always the years...

Always the love...

Always the hours..."

Julianne Moore,

-=-=-=-=-==

2.Clarissa在sally走后说了一句话,why is everything wrong.

Virginia Woolf: I'm dying in this town.
Leonard Woolf: If you were thinking clearly, Virginia, you would recall it was London that brought you low.
Virginia Woolf: If I were thinking clearly? If I were thinking clearly?
Leonard Woolf: We brought you to Richmond to give you peace.
Virginia Woolf: If I were thinking clearly, Leonard, I would tell you that I wrestle alone in the dark, in the deep dark, and that only I can know. Only I can understand my condition. You live with the threat, you tell me you live with the threat of my extinction. Leonard, I live with it too.

Clarissa:I remember one morning getting up at dawn, there was such a sense of possibility. You know, that feeling? And I remember thinking to myself this is the beginning of happiness. This is where it starts. And of course there will always be more. It never occurred to me it wasn't the beginning. It was happiness. It was the moment. Right then.
What a wonderful world!
Virginia:Dear Leonard. To look life in the face. Always to look life in the face and to know it for what it is. At last to know it. To love it for what it is, and then, to put it away. Leonard. Always the years between us. Always the years. Always the love. Always the hours.

~※~
Virginia Woolf: This is my right; it is the right of every human being. I choose not the suffocating anesthetic of the suburbs, but the violent jolt of the Capital, that is my choice. The meanest patient, yes, even the very lowest is allowed some say in the matter of her own prescription. Thereby she defines her humanity. I wish, for your sake, Leonard, I could be happy in this quietness.
[pause]
Virginia Woolf: But if it is a choice between Richmond and death, I choose death.

You cannot find peace by avoiding life. 那中间的逻辑大约如她在给男子伦Nader的遗书中说的那么,to look life in the face, to know it, to love it, and then put it away.

Clarissa Vaughn: All right Richard, do me one simple favor. Come. Come sit.
Richard Brown: I don't think I can make it to the party, Clarissa.
Clarissa Vaughn: You don't have to go to the party, you don't have to go to the ceremony, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do. You can do as you like.
Richard Brown: But I still have to face the hours, don't I? I mean, the hours after the party, and the hours after that...
Clarissa Vaughn: You do have good days still. You know you do.
Richard Brown: Not really. I mean, it's kind of you to say so, but it's not really true.

~※~
Virginia Woolf: You cannot find peace by avoiding life, Leonard.

~※~
Clarissa Vaughn: That is what we do. That is what people do. They stay alive for each other.

Virginia Woolf: Dear Leonard. To look life in the face, always, to look life in the face and to know it for what it is. At last to know it, to love it for what it is, and then, to put it away. Leonard, always the years between us, always the years. Always the love. Always the hours.

Mrs Dalloway

Clarissa Vaughn: I don't know what's happening to me. I seemed to be unraveling.
